Sec. 501: Jail time for the uninsured
Section 501 creates a new tax on individuals without “acceptable” health care coverage, in other words, the millions of uninsured Americans. Failure to pay this tax on the uninsured would result in the wide array of penalties at the IRS’ disposal, including jail time. Instead of locking up the uninsured, as Democrats have written in their bill, we need to make coverage more affordable for all Americans.

So my Federal Govt wants to mandate that I purchase health insurance, while dictating the minimum requirements, regardless of cost? regardless of need? And to make matters worse, will sic the IRS on me if I don’t comply? Really? The IRS is already a feared agency with horror stories of abuse and misinformation in abundance. Is this how you will make sure I comply - through fear? May as well change the IRS name to KGB. What if I can’t afford the insurance you think I should have? But don’t qualify for subsidies? Hmm? Guess I’m hosed, heh? I’ll have no recourse because I’m now reduced to something less than a United States citizens with basic rights as defined by the US Constitution.
4 months agoIf you Repubs would let there be an affordable public option, no one would need to go without. And it’s not likely that you’d be thrown in jail because you can’t afford health insurance. Stop with the scare tactics. The right sure seems to be easily scared…
4 months agoRegardless of cost?? Isn’t it nice and cheap right now with all the great competition?? Long term costs are in a large part because of people who are uninsured…. and of course you give us NO alternative (as usual) to fix that problem… because there is not a better one than to fine people for not getting it.
4 months agoI find it impossible to believe that so many people can turn their backs on so many peole, (47 million, as per the Census Bureau’s latest report) and continue to call themselves Christian. Jesus told them that they are their brother’s keeper and all praying should be done in the closet. Funny.

4 months agoMakes me angry that they can just waltz in there and decide to do away with a health system that has worked for so long in this country and put something else in that no one wants! And then threaten us with a huge fine or jail if we con’t agree to jump thru their hoops!
4 months agoI think I will take my chances! I simply do not want their health care plan! Who do they think they are pushing their ideas onto me! No, I don’t want to go to jail either and I don’t understand how they can do that! The “Change” I would like to make is not with health care…. but it IS in the govt. offices….
There HAS to be a way to stop this plan. There are too many BAD ideas. It doesn’t work in Canada and other countries, so it only make sense that it would not work here in the U.S. My sister-in-law in UK had to wait several weeks for an “emergency colonoscopy”. Does that make sense?
4 months agoIt’s time for “We the People” to not just be angry at what’s going on in Washington, but to prepared to do something about it in 2010. Prepare to take action! Now is the time! Check it out: http://www.flipthishouse2010.com
4 months agoDr Burgess. We pay you more than 170 thousand dollars to go to congress and create laws in concert with other lawmakers that will benefit our nation. You owe us more than just a post of sections of the Healthcare reform Bill that your party does not like. These post serve only to inflame members of your party.
If this is the kind of negotiation you are doing in Washington, there is no wondering why congress can’t make progress on a bill that would be good for the American people.
If you agree that participation by all in the Healthcare system is vital to successful implementation of the system and achieves the goal of driving down cost, please tell us the alternative that you have proposed on the floor that is better than taxing those that decide not to pay their share of healthcare cost. The people burden our current system by going to the emergency room. We pay in higher premiums when they don’t.
We don’t pay you to go to Washington to point fingers and talk about how bad the other guys are. We pay you to hammer out solution. We pay you to recognize the good and bad in each of these bill sections and convey the good and bad to us..
You’ve listed the segments of the bill but you’ve not taken the time to outline what it will do to promote participation in the reforms being proposed. This healthcare situation is very complex and I would appreciate if you start communicating in a balanced way as you feed us the information you are finding. Please list both the good and bad in these published bill segments and tell us if you favor them and why.
Please offer us an opportunity to give you feed back or conduct some sort of published poll so our voice can count in this matter.
